Module: Lysis

For large DNA phages, host cell lysis is an active genetically programmed pathway that releases phages from the infected cell into the environment. Lysis is independent of virion assembly and involves targeted disruption of the cell envelope layers.

The unimolecular spanin protein spans the periplasmic space and is anchored in the inner membrane by a transmembrane domain and the outer membrane by a lipoylation. The u-spanin accomplishes outer membrane disruption during host cell lysis by phage.
